Samhain

(sow-in) / (sah-win)

October 31 - November 1

Samhain was and continues to be a very special Sabbat for Pagans. Ancient Celts believed it to be the most important of the four fire festivals. Not only is it a time for remembrance and communicating with the dead (it is said that the veil between worlds is at it’s thinnest during this time), but sunset also marks as the first day of the Celtic calendar and the Witch’s New Year.

An easy recipe for traditional Samhain Soul Cakes

Soul cakes were traditionally given to “soulers”, mostly children, that would go door to door receiving cakes in exchange for a song. Sometimes soul papers (prayer requests for the dead) were given along with the cakes. They are also commonly used as offerings to the dead during this time of remembrance.
